TuneCore Became My Publisher โ€“ Then Told Me My Music Wasn’t Eligible for YouTube (part 1)

Subtitle:ย How TuneCore signed a publishing agreement with me, failed to monetise 158,000 streams, and then rejected my ownership documents.

Future By Design - TuneCore
Future By Design โ€“ TuneCore

Introduction

I am an independent musician and composer โ€“ I love music, listening, creating; โ€“ it is the part of life I most enjoy. Like many of you, I used TuneCore to distribute my music to platforms like Spotify, Apple Music etc โ€“ I want to reach people with the music I am making. At TuneCoreโ€™s invitation, I signed up for theirย Publishing Administration service and TuneCore became my exclusive publisher.

What followed was a 158,762โ€‘stream discrepancy on YouTube โ€“ and a circular, contradictory response from TuneCore that every independent artist should understand could happen to them if they use TuneCore as a distributor and/or publisher.

This post is a public account of what happened. It is intended for two audiences:

  1. Other musiciansย โ€“ so you can avoid the same trap.
  2. Regulatory bodiesย โ€“ because this behaviour warrants attention.

The Short Version

I know 150k streams of monetisation revenue may not work out to all that much in terms of payment for an individual artist, but it is the principle of the matter, I own the work, I own the monetisation from the streams, so why does TuneCore, YouTube or another creator get the right to keep it?

I sometimes wonder if the smaller independent artist is subsidising these big companies by the back door through the apparent lack of transparency in the distribution reporting process.

When I asked TuneCore for an explanation about this under-reporting of streams and monetisation, they told me my music wasย โ€œnot eligible for YouTube Content IDโ€ย โ€“ despite having signed a contract with me that explicitly required them to monetise my music on YouTube.

They went on to state that because some of my tracks had been made available on a royalty free platform, that those tracks could not be monetised. However, the platform I uploaded the tracks to โ€œPixabayโ€, specifically states the following in their contract:

Responsibility for determining whether permissions are needed always rests solely and exclusively with you. We do not warrant that any consents or licenses have been obtained in relation to any Content.

PixaBay Terms of Service, Clause 5

Uploading toย Pixabayย does not grant exclusive rights toย Pixabay, nor does it waive my right to monetise my music elsewhere. Nonโ€‘exclusive licences are explicitly permitted under TuneCoreโ€™s Content ID eligibility rules. Besides, TuneCore still refused to monetise some of my tracks that were not uploaded to PixaBay.

The Contract They Signed

Onย 7 March 2024, I signed TuneCoreโ€™s standardย Publishing Administration Agreement. Under that agreement:

  • Clause 1.1ย โ€“ TuneCore became myย โ€œsole and exclusiveโ€ย publisher worldwide.
  • Clause 1.1(f)ย โ€“ TuneCore specifically agreed toย โ€œidentify, claim and monetize videos containing Compositionsโ€ย on YouTube, Facebook, TikTok, and other platforms.
  • Clause 6.1(iv)ย โ€“ I warranted that the rights wereย โ€œfree and clear of any claimsโ€.
  • Clause 6.1(v)ย โ€“ I confirmed thatย โ€œno consent of any third party is requiredโ€.

TuneCore accepted these warranties. They registered themselves as my publisher with PRS UK (appearing as Sentric Music). They began collecting the publisherโ€™s share of my royalties.

Then, when I asked why YouTube streams were not being properly monetised, they told me my music wasย โ€œnot eligibleโ€.

A publisher cannot sign an agreement to monetise your music and then declare that same music ineligible for monetisation.ย That is a blatant contractual contradiction.

The Evidence I Provided

When TuneCore asked for proof of ownership, I provided:

EvidenceFormatTuneCoreโ€™s Response
PRS UK registration sheetsPDFRejected asย โ€œsplit sheetsโ€

Their own Publishing AgreementPDFDemonstrates their contractual obligation

TuneCoreโ€™s evidence policy appears to exclude:

  • Government copyright registrations
  • Collecting society registrations
  • YouTubeโ€™s own acceptance of ownership
  • Any documentation not in their preferred format

This creates anย unmeetable standardย for independent artists. I know TuneCore support can be frustrating and Iโ€™ve read many articles from other artists about TuneCoreโ€™s circular conversations and inexplicable decision making. It makes me think that for smaller artists like myself TuneCore is a trap, offering enough to lure you in, but then leaching you out of your value once their claws are in.

It makes me angry, that you spend your money on equipment, lessons, and take the time to do the work, register it; but then in the distribution and revenue collection process come up against organisations that appear to have a greater claim to the revenue from your work than you do, especially as they have invested next to nothing, if anything at all, in the work itself!?

This follows on from the nonsense that Spotify has introduced where tracks with fewer than 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months do not generate royalty payments โ€“ effectively blocking the smallest independent artists from earning anything at all. Independent companies are finding ways to block artists from exercising their statutory rights.

The Termination

I terminated the Publishing Agreement effectiveย 31 March 2026. TuneCore confirmed a 12โ€‘month postโ€‘term collection period.

The period in dispute (July 2024 โ€“ March 2026) falls entirely within the active term. Termination does not erase liability for the breaches I am alleging that occurred while the agreement was in force.

TuneCore continues to collect royalties from that period under the postโ€‘term clause. They have not corrected the underreporting to the date this article was published.

Why This Matters for Other Musicians

If you are an independent artist, ask yourself:

  • Does your distributor also act as your publisher?ย Read the agreement carefully. You may be granting exclusive rights without realising it.
  • Does your distributor require proof of ownership they will not accept?ย TuneCore rejected US government copyright registrations. Ask what evidence theyย willย accept before you sign.
  • Does your distributor have a conflict of interest?ย TuneCore collects publisherโ€™s share while allegedly unable to monetise your music. Who is that serving?
  • Can you ever audit their reporting?ย Section 14(b) of TuneCoreโ€™s standard terms states:ย โ€œYou shall have no right to inspect or audit TuneCoreโ€™s books.โ€ย This is a red flag.

Before signing a publishing agreement with any distributor, obtain independent legal advice.

What I Am Asking For

To TuneCore (publicly):

  1. Correct the 158,762 missing streams for the period July 2024 โ€“ March 2026
  2. Provide theย claim_idย andย statusย for each video URL in my spreadsheet using the Content ID Partner API
  3. Explain how my music can be simultaneouslyย โ€œunder exclusive publishing administrationโ€ย andย โ€œnot eligible for Content IDโ€
  4. Clarify what proof of ownership theyย willย accept from independent artists

To regulatory bodies (CMA, FTC, EU Commission, competition authorities):

  • Investigate whether TuneCoreโ€™s Publishing Administration service creates an inherent conflict of interest when the same company is responsible for bothย distributingย music andย administering publishing rights
  • Examine whether TuneCoreโ€™s evidence requirements for Content ID eligibility are reasonably attainable for independent artists, or whether they function as a barrier to monetisation
  • Review the contractual clause that waives an artistโ€™s right to audit TuneCoreโ€™s reporting (Section 14(b) of their standard terms)

What I Am Doing Next

On my original support query, I asked TuneCore to provide a substantive response byย 30 April 2026, but my ticket with them was closed even before that date. I raised another ticket as a chaser and got no clear response. Therefore I intend to:

  • Escalate this matter to YouTubeโ€™s Partner Support
  • Consider legal action for breach of contract
  • Share my findings with every independent musician and regulatory body willing to listen

Supporting Documents (Available to Regulatory Bodies on Request)

  • TuneCore Publishing Administration Agreement (signed 7 March 2024)
  • PRS UK registration sheets (15 works)
  • US Copyright Office registrations
  • YouTube copyright strike confirmations (3 examples)
  • Detailed spreadsheet showing 407,000 YouTube views vs. 7,364 reported streams

Closing

I am one artist. My catalog is modest. But if TuneCore is doing this to me, they are doing it to others.

Independent musicians already face enough barriers. We should not have to fight our own publisher to be paid for the streams we are owed.

This is not a dispute about a few dollars. This is about whether a distributor who becomes a publisher can be trusted to act in the artistโ€™s interest.

The evidence speaks for itself.

This post represents my personal experience and is based on documentation I hold. I am sharing this in good faith to inform other independent artists and to invite regulatory scrutiny where appropriate.

Does Capitalism make sense for Africa?

The key thing for Africanโ€™s in Africa and in the Diaspora to understand is that land is wealth. I canโ€™t say it any more simply than that. When you have land, you can build your house, grow your crops and live in freedom.

Capitalism, although it may be all we have ever known and may be all we see in our history books is a new invention, and a system designed to place land, currency, and the means of production in the hands of the wealthy. This system is based on varying levels of coercive force, physical, economic, social, etc โ€“ and it drives those who are not wealthy into need, so they must labour in order to earn currency to afford shelter, buy food and goods of varying kinds.

You can live off the land if you are lucky enough to have that. If you donโ€™t have land you have to live from the supermarket which traps you in a system of debt. Donโ€™t be fooled by the pretty exterior โ€“ the system wants your soul, until death.

You will have noted that Africa was the source of the human resource that has made much of the Northern Hemisphere (America, Europe, Middle East) rich through the Arab and Trans-Atlantic Slave trades. In the current day Africa again is the source of materials that those same areas of the world rely on extracting at low cost from in order to build wealth. Capitalism relies on cheap or free labour and cheap or free materials as key elements to enable profit to be made.

โ€œMarketsโ€ are also key to Capitalism, and by this I donโ€™t mean the traditional town or village market where different stall holders bring their goods to sell. No, the โ€œmarketsโ€ that Capitalism defines are not physical but rather they are structural, they exist at an organisational level underlying the sale of everything. These markets are not necessarily focused on a specific geographic location, but can be nationwide, regional and are frequently global. However, markets still indirectly connect sellers with buyers.

The impact of the market system is deliberate and on the level of nations mirrors what capitalism does between people, the wealthy and the poor; it creates a power imbalance and need. So when coffee is produced in Ethiopia, oil in Nigeria or diamondโ€™s in Botswana, even though these nations have a valuable resource, they must seek a market to sell it in. The prices of goods in markets are often set not by the nations that have the goods, but by cartels which serve the nations that want to buy those materials. Therefore the raw materials are kept at a low cost so that multinational companies can process, manufacture and brand them in order to sell them on at profit.

Even currency has its own market, and when nations selling raw materials, processed materials and even finished goods have weaker currencies than the nations participating in markets that buy those goods, they struggle to generate the wealth. Just like the market for raw materials and goods, the market for currency is artificially set and it is not based on an objective standard.

Markets can also create scarcity to drive up the price โ€“ note the issue with the cost of oil at the moment because of US aggression in Iran and Venezuela. Markets can also drive demand for things which are not essential to peoplesโ€™ lives, like cars, computer games, and luxury goods.

Whoever loves money never has enough;
whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income.
This too is meaningless.
As goods increase,
so do those who consume them.
And what benefit are they to the owners
except to feast their eyes on them?

Ecclesiastes chapter 5, verses 10&11

So we participate in a system that drives and perpetuates our continued reliance on it for survival. What happens if you stop work? No work, no currency, no shelter, no food. What happens if nations or companies refuse to observe the market system? No market, raw materials and goods are stranded and no profit is obtained from them.

The bewitching nature of the Capitalist system is powerful. We labour and strive for pretty trinkets and consumer goods that will be obsolete in a few years time. We jump through hoops to comply with laws and obligations that drain us of currency. We are driven from the land to live stacked on top of one another in blocks of flats in towns and cities and we think we are progressing because we have the latest technologies.

Capitalism doesnโ€™t make us wealthy, it makes us poor. You can describe its effects like the analogy of frog placed in a pot of water, and the frog will stay there quite happily while the pot is being heated, not knowing it is being boiled to death. So too it is with Capitalism, our wealth is devalued (inflation), and laws are enacted to control us more and more, taking away our rights, so that the ruling class can gain more wealth while pushing people deeper into poverty, yet all the time we donโ€™t realise it because we are either bribed or fooled by the illusion that possessions are wealth. I say again, what we need to realise is land is wealth.

Carefully evaluate the path you want to take because the decisions you take will not only affect you, but generations after you, and even as collectively we shape the direction of the continents growth and progression.

Rockerfeller’s Eurocentric Capitalist Vampire

Some say capitalism is vampirism. The lifeblood of the system is our often underpaid labour which we use to buy โ€œstuffโ€. Of course we love goods, services, technology and the apparent ease of life that the capitalist system produces. The world over capitalism seems to have largely beaten other systems like socialism and communism, although you might say that notable countries such as China, Russia, Cuba, North Korea etc still hold onto forms of economic control more rooted in those systems.

However, what we have to understand is, capitalism, at its root relies on exploitation, and the business model of the most successful companies we see feeds on corruption and a system that magnifies greed and treats the workers that build the business as expendable, manipulable resources. The debt trap, security, or even pride of status keeps us contributing to a system that is systematically designed to devalue everything except the profits it makes. Therefore the worlds resources and the people who extract them and manipulate them are slaves to a system that has us locked in a perpetual battle of labour chasing wealth while fighting off debt and scarcity.

Africa Launches PAPSSCARD – A step toward financial sovereignty

PAPSS is a new system designed to help African businesses transact across borders with lower fees for moving your money. This provides a real alternative to sending banking transactions through the European and American banking systems which each add there own costs and take their own cut of each transaction to enrich people not directly associated with the financial transaction taking place.

This is a good example of Africanโ€™s taking matters into their own hands, and being independent of the control of foreigners. We need to see more initiatives like this in every area of life for African nations to break free from the shackles of colonialism and the various power imbalances favouring the nations that take advantage of some African nations, and perhaps even the continent as a whole, current state of immaturity.

Racist banking practices affecting Africa

Another great Subi Shop video exposing the racist banking practices that affect African countries. The statistics clearly show that African countries may be as credit worthy as European nations, but they are charged more in interest and fees that those European nations when it comes to borrowing loans. What this means is that African nations stay in debt longer and develop more slowly than their European counterparts.

This goes to prove the point I make in many of my articles, that they European system is heavily stacked against Africans and exists as a means of exploitation.

On a deeper level, when Africa clearly has more resources than Europe, which is why the Europeans have been plundering Africa for the last 400 or so years, you have to question why Africanโ€™s have to borrow from Europe in the first place?

It is time for the sleeping giant to arise, move from merely providing resources through extraction, to refining and processing with the aim of making finished goods. Understand this, if European nations (and I include USA in this) as well as those from the east such as China, Russia and India actually paid a fair price for raw materials, or paid the far higher price for finished goods sold from African companies, then they would not have the standard of living that they do now. Africans would not be running to earn better pay abroad on other continents, it would be Europeans wanting to escape to Africa!

Why are black men so angry – “real-talk” – part 1

Itโ€™s true. The environment we live in, particularly for those of the African Diaspora, socially, politically, economically, educationally, in terms of justice, health, religion and I could go on; is in varying degrees against people of colour. In the UK we talk about โ€œinstitutional racismโ€, โ€œimplicit biasโ€, โ€œmicroaggressionsโ€, these are like a slow steady force, like the calm waves against rock, gradually over time wearing us down. Of course you also have outright aggressive racism, which we hear is on the rise in the USA, but still we deal with everywhere in the form of verbal and physical violence, police brutality, even killings.

Are we maladjusted? No. They system we are a part of is not โ€œnormalโ€. To frame such an environment as normal, one has to betray a part of their humanity and thus lose it. This world is anything but normal, things are not as they should be. As a black man, my mind is adjusted for on-going trauma, something verging on โ€œhyper-awarenessโ€, not only because of the closet and even open hostility of people I may meet, and also for situations I may encounter, sporadically or even as part of my routine, such as work. This pressure on the mind is a force that produces some negative reactions. To abstract this, there is noting surprising about that statement for many living organisms, people, animals, plants, all struggle in environments where the conditions are not optimal for their growth.

I found Professor Odiโ€™s comments on black women very interesting, indeed for some not all, โ€œthey rather watch me die on the horse than get off itโ€. Are men to be somewhat like expendable pawns for the women in their lives? Yes men have to be strong, but there needs to be true union of purpose and will between partners for that self-sacrificial love for โ€œprovidershipโ€ to be legitimate. In large part because of the system we are in, many black men will fail to be that โ€œproviderโ€ in a reliable way. Iโ€™ve seen relationships strained and break down over money. Itโ€™s not uncommon for women to leave a relationship if their needs arenโ€™t being met.

My question is, how do we, as black people in the Diaspora evolve in terms of our relationships given the environment we face? Are we headed in a way that promotes relationships with longevity, that build trust, that find a way through the โ€œcold whitenessโ€; or will we remain locked into whatever favours us at the time, short-termism, perhaps whatever is expedient? I believe we have to think as a community, about building a future, not primarily based on wealth and financial security, but on bonds that hold a more stable currency that keeps us together and slowly improves us from within, even through the various challenges and trials we face.

That all said, this is a must watch video that gets to some topics we donโ€™t often talk about in relation to black men and relationships. I really was refreshing to see and hear these men, part of a growing number of black men talking with eloquence, intelligence and common sense about real issues, and not the foolishness some people are all about nowadays.
